Kayla Hatfield
Hi my name is Kayla Hatfield I am 18 years old and I have been homeless for 6 months. My mother passed away in June 2016, she was my sole caretaker. My father has been in and out of rehabs, prisons and jail cells. I was homeless for 2 months in Wisconsin, in a town with little to no resources. So I came to Los Angeles, since I was going to be homeless either way. I had friends in Lancaster and family in Riverside. I stayed with my cousin in Riverside and she soon kicked me out. I was on the streets of Los Angeles for 4 months, until I fell down some stairs in a parking garage. I was taken to the UCLA hospital, where a caseworker helped to get me into the covenant house. Once I came here, things got a lot better. I am still struggling with the past and trying to proceed forward, but I feel more supported than ever before.
What is one important lesson learned while transitioning into adulthood?
I have learned to be more patient. Also, we don’t give humanity enough credit. There are a lot of bad people in the world, but there is also a lot of good. And I think we should take the time to appreciate and acknowledge that.
What are your goals for your adulthood?
I would like to go back to school. I have my high school diploma, but would like to go to college. I don’t know what for yet. I would also like more stability. My time in the past 3 months has been more stable than my entire life.
What is one thing you would like Seed House Project’s assistance in?
I would like their help with finding employment.
